We have shim sets
available for rent. Please note that these rental kits do NOT include the
tools. They are available for
purchase separately. We do not
rent the tools, since they pay for themselves the 2nd time they are
used.
These shim kits
have been designed by well-known SHO Guru Gary Morrell, and come in sets of 56
shims.
You rent the shims
for three weeks and then return the set with all the unused shims and all
the shims you took off the car to have your deposit refunded.
The factory sets the
valve clearances in the middle of the range: 6-10 thou intake, 10-14 thou
exhaust. Although the clearances increase over time, leading to the need for
thicker shims, they also have to allow for the valves to bed in from new,
leading to smaller clearances.
Once the valves
have bedded in, it is common practice to set the clearances at the lower end –
0.006” intake and 0.010” exhaust - so you will probably replace all 24 shims.
This gives you slightly higher valve lift leading to a little more power, and prolongs
the service interval.
Shims come in
different sizes. There is a 4-digit number on the underside of each shim that
gives the thickness in mm. For instance, a 2500 shim is 2.500 mm thick. The
next thickest shim is 2525 (2.525 mm or roughly one thou thicker). Note that shims do NOT wear,
i.e. they do not get thinner with time/use – they only get damaged, which
requires flipping to re-use or replacement (see below). It is the cams that wear (or the valves
that seat) which is why an adjustment is required.
The 56 shim set contains the following sizes:

We still have a few of these sizes in currently-rented kits, but there is no
guarantee that your kit will get them - we can only send them out as we get
them back. |

Notes on Used Shims
For the used shims in the kits, we make sure
that at least ONE side (including the bottom side) is good. Note that shims can be used
either side up. They can be used
side up (with the number on the underside) as long as the surface is mirror
smooth without any scratches or nicks. If the top surface is damaged, (and there may be some in the Rental
kits) the shim can be flipped over so the bottom is now up, and the shim number
written on the other side with a permanent marker as the factory number will
wear off.
Note that we feel
that a used shim is perfectly fine to put back in your engine, provided the
surface is mirror smooth without any scratches. A good way to check for scratches is to lightly run the tip
of the pick over the surface. If
it catches on a scratch, then that shim should be flipped.
